View Full Version : DS Phat Housing Swap
06-05-2009, 05:50 PM
Anybody done one of these? I just bough a DS Phat for 5 dollars that is pretty beat up and the hinge is broken. I saw the replacement housing on DX for like 6 bucks and was wondering if doing the Phat housing swap was easier than the Lite one. I will post pics in a bit.

I had an offer to review one, but I didn't actually HAVE a DS phat to test it with. :( Sorry!
Definitely worth a shot though, I remember www.scdev.org had a tutorial competition and one of the winners was an AMAZING picture/guide on how to disassemble the DS phat. $5, what a bargain! Can't even get a Gameboy color at that price :( Although I guess american currency is worth slightly more XD

Heh well I got the DS for free so I might as well pick up a housing. If I can't do it I can just send it to my cousin again. I am probably picking up a black housing to go with my black DSi.

Awww go spice it up a little, there are so many cool colors like Gold XD

Hmmmm that's not nearly as bad as I imagined it to be. What great luck to find it for practically nothing! Anyways, looking at the cases at DX, yea black is easily one of the nicer colors, although white ain't bad either.
And here was the tutorial I was talking about:

Yeah I found the tut this morning thanks for the link though. I didn't want white (If you recall I didn't like white on my lite let alone a Phat ;} )
Now I only have to wait half a month. Thankfully summer is here so time is not an issue. (Canceled my trip to Ohio)

Alright guys, 4 hours after receiving my package and I am done. It was pretty tough to get the hinges in but the rest was easy here are some pics:
No wonder it was so tough... This is for the Ninetudo DS and I have a Nintendo DS...

Then you got to do the Zelda triforce shell mod!

Errrrr does the shell come with the sticker in the back?
It looks like a pretty good job! So everything works again? :)

It does come with one but it looked extremely cheap and lopsided. And yes everything works fine now. I have put all of my Retro Game Challenge time into that phat :)

Haha, I went and swapped the case for my old DS Phat without any guides at all. I had a hard time finding one for the DSP...I found a disassembly one, but I only followed that one for a few minutes before going off on my own. It worked fine. :P

I'm surprised you actually bought one for five dollars, even if it was broken. But, yeah I have done a case mod for my original DS, the whole process wasn't all that bad, it took a few looks to find out where everything went but other than that it was relatively easy.

That looks pretty nice. Does the DS feel any more or less comfortable with that case?
08-02-2009, 01:52 PM
It feels about the same from what I remember. Before this one, I hadn't had a phat for a while. Everything feels great though.
I'm really starting to hate black, almost every system I have is black. Yet I'm still buying black systems. :/ That replacement case looks great though, I might have to get one.

Mine feels somewhat crappy...some of the buttons just don't press down very nice. Doesn't really matter though, since I never use it anymore. :P

Wow! That's a pretty good deal. Enjoy your DS =)

Haha, thanks. I have been using my phat a lot lately considering my AK2i acts up in my DSi.
