Splashtop – Can’t wait to see more netbooks with it!

It’s been a long time coming, but I think the newly released Asus N10 netbook is the first netbook (I stand corrected, it seems Lenovo had the first netbooks with Splashtop) to be equipped with Splashtop.  I’ve been hoping that splashtop would come to more laptops and computers faster, but it doesn’t seem to be getting too much interest or attention anywhere.

Splashtop is basically a way to speed up the time between turning your computer on and you surfing the net and listening to some music.  Basically it is a way for you to boot a secondary OS (Splashtop) that can be loaded in a matter of seconds.  This OS is limited to only web browsing, music, skype, photos, and instant messaging, which means you’ll have to restart your computer if you want to do your homework or play some games.

It excites me to see that Asus (one of only 3 brands actually using Splashtop) have finally made it available on a netbook.  To me, Splashtop pairs up with netbooks and they should all come with it.  Sure you can rig your EEEPC to load up in 15 seconds, but that requires so much tweaking.  Or perhaps you have to keep Linux, which means that you have the same amount of features as Splashtop (sorry Linux users, but the that’s the truth about the version supplied with some netbooks), so you might as well dual boot Splashtop and Windows XP.  The idea of the netbook was to provide a quick way to access the internet when you move around, and splashtop can cut down the boot time anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes.

Since I don’t mind spending lots of time tweaking my laptops and netbooks, I can get my boot time pretty low, so Splashtop isn’t all important for me.  But for those of you who are planning to buy netbooks, or even laptops and desktops just to surf the net and listen to music for the majority of the time, you might want to look at an Asus model with Splashtop.

Splashtop is available on the Lenovo S10 and S10e netbookss as well.

I like the idea, but I think it’d be a lot nicer if it could be set to load your other OS- XP, Linux, whatever- in the background once it’s ready to go, in case you wanted to switch over and do something else without reboot time. Maybe I’m the only one who likes the sound of that, but hey, everyone’s got their own opinions.

The most crucial part of netbooks for me is battery life time. So I don’t mind tweaking OS to be able to sit down in a coffeehouse and waste my time.

So now it’s available on laptops eh. Not much a laptop user, but I have a friend who this would be perfect for.

I think battery life is definitely an important aspect, I’m just saying that there are lots of cool things that netbooks are going to be able to do, things that people never expected to be possible. I’m eagerly awaiting another netbook with a DVD drive.

The first few lines reminds me about instant boot, the computer goes in the standby mode, but everything get saved and turns off, turn it on and it restores.
