The developer Clintorion unveiled his project yesterday, an MMORPG for the DS. I entered the GBATemp thread expecting absolutely nothing.
It isn’t the first time people have claimed to have MMORPG’s. Maplestory DS turned out to be nothing more than a side-scroller while Runescape, although impressive, was merely connecting to a few players at a time. Even before the retail games we had a few demos of worlds that homebrewers planned to change into real MMORPG games. Unfortunately nothing came of it.
This MMORPG is much more developed. According to the author, it is a proof of concept more than an actual game. This MMORPG is an actual MMORPG, you can actually connect to others, talk to others, etc. There is a pretty rough battle system, PVP areas, etc. The map consists of a single dungeon and a few forested areas, and probably under 10 panels. Nevertheless, this proof of concept is definitely interesting.
Where the interest lies is the construction of the game. It isn’t a homebrew file, or a retail game, but a browser game. Using PHP, Javascript and CSS, we have a perfectly playable engine. This means that you need the Opera Web Browser to play. All you do is simply point your browser to http://mmorpg.clint.f-sw.com/.
I’ve already read about some complaints and bashing about this, but I think it is an incredibly bright idea. It works fine on the DS, it is certainly playable, and with a bit more work it could be really nice.
The beautiful thing about this MMORPG is that you don’t need the DS at all. It is browser based, so simply go to the link above with your internet explorer and try it out.
The icons on the right do the following (in order from top to bottom):
(speech bubble) – opens/closes chat
(inventory) – shows items. cannot open equip yet, but there are items to equip, which open the equipment when you click them.
(fight screen) – displays battle text, shows stats of enemy.
(player info) – click this to see the stats of whoever you have selected. Used to initiate fighting and alternate way to send PMs in game.
(pvp switch) – turn pvp on/off. green=on, red=off. Some areas are no pvp, some are forced pvp.
(X) – Logout of the game. (you must log out, failing to do so causes problems when you try to log back in)
(refresh) – refreshes the game whenever you want (automatically done every couple seconds)Well, I hope you enjoy the very first DS compatible MMORPG!

I know its the first one and all and I shouldn’t expect much but..its not really that impressive..
I agree that it isn’t impressive in the fact that it is going to be groundbreaking, I think it is impressive in the fact that it is a good idea. A nice way to think outside of the box.
this game is awesome, and happy chinese new year to you guys.
hmm, im surprised the graphics are even as good as they are, i know the opera browser has been very poor when it comes to graphics for me.
Looks good ill have to give it a try
this looks like some fun, guess i’ll have to go download the nintendo browser
Impressive concept.
do they make a ROM of it to download and play on the DS for when you don’t have Wi-Fi.
Cool! 🙂
cool game. 😀
It’s a pretty small game, so my answer to Jesus is no.
Maybe in this case, MMORPG = massively minute online RPG?
Wow that’s a really awesome way to do a MMORPG on the DS. Would have never thought that is how the first one would be. Gotta try this some time.
This is a step in the right direction. Great concept for sure.
whoa thats a weird game
