Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Over the weekend, I finally picked up and finished Professor Layton and the Curious Village on the DS. This game has been highly recommended, but also doubted by many (myself included).

Before I actually played through it, I always thought that it was just a jumble of puzzles stringed together with a weak story. I couldn’t believe how many times it got nominated or voted for best game, or best gameplay or best whatever. And I’m sure I’m not the only one. I even booted up the game and played an hour or so in the past, and the idea of a mix of random puzzles still stuck with me.

But Professor Layton and the Curious Village is much more than that. Over the weekend, I spent 8 and a half hours to finish the game. It is fantastic. Professor Layton and the Curious Village is one of those games that you can only enjoy when you sink time into it, and even more so when you look back at it.

The concept of the game is to solve puzzles to find out more about the village. And I was never wrong to think that the string of puzzles is tied to a story, because it is exactly like that. It is really quite enjoyable actually. There are enough puzzles to make it challenging, but not enough to really annoy you. You don’t have to go out of your way to complete puzzles, but the game won’t just give you the story either. The story isn’t mind-blowingly good, but it is enough to keep you going.

On the off chance that you are stuck on a puzzle, most of the viewers at DSDatabase have access to various ways of cheating. There are many cheats, most of them would ruin the game, but some of the ones that I think would have been ok to use would be the ones that negate the penalties of answering a puzzle wrong.

There are even really detailed guides. I was stuck on Puzzle 100 for some time, and went to this awesome blog with all the answers for the solution. They give you the hints, then the answer and such. The link to the site is: http://professorlaytonwalkthrough.blogspot.com/.

So if you like puzzles or a good story, or even if you don’t, you should definitely try out Professor Layton and the Curious Village for the DS. Keep in mind that it took me more than an hour to actual start enjoying the game, so don’t ditch it right when you start hating it.

I hated the game. Easy puzzle and then a really long dialogue scene before I turned it off.

My girlfriend and I played this as a stress reliever while working on our thesis. It turned out to add to our stress at some puzzles… -__- This game is a mindbending challenge and it may be one of the games that will not be able to finish… =c
