Sony E3 2009 Summary

While I was typing away the Nintendo E3 2009 Summary, I was also watching the Sony conference. Rather interesting actually, it had quite a slow start (asides from the PSP Go if you thought that was exciting, or maybe the purple Hannah Montana PSP), but it quickly got exciting near the end with a bunch of nice announcements. Honestly though, I though Sony wouldn’t have anything to say today since everything seemed to have leaked out, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Again, to save you all from catching a rerun of the two-hour conference, here’s a condensed (somewhat) version of what happened, skipping all the stats and all of the boring talk:

Playstation Motion Controller – PS3 Hardware – Spring 2010 – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED (leaked)
– So this prototype was just a black stick with buttons and a ball at the tip that could change colors. It seems to work with an eyetoy to capture movements that are apparently accurate to the millimeter. The tech demo was an actual demo, no trailer with happy families, instead a room filled with things like bats, rackets, swords, etc. The demo was really impressive, it is clearly 1:1 response. They showed how it would work for drawing, fighting, FPS, RTS, etc. It seems to be what people should have expected from the original Wii Remote.

Final Fantasy XIV Online – PS3 – 2010 – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED
– Shocking to see yet another Final Fantasy game, seems to be an MMO this time. That’s right, this is 13, but 14 (for those of you who can’t read roman numerals). Nothing more than an impressive trailer, but this one WILL be EXCLUSIVE to the PS3. So much for Microsoft fans thinking they won everything with the Final Fantasy XIII takeover.

The Last Guardian – PS3 – To Be Announced – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED (leaked)
– Yet another sequel to popular games that I missed out on because I didn’t have a PS2 last generation. It is the 3rd in the trilogy which also contains Ico and the Shadow of Colossus. The old games seem to have gotten pretty good reviews…

Assasin’s Creed II – PS3 – 2009 – Not Exclusive, already announced
– Looks amazing, they showcased these wing things and the game looks pretty amazing. It’s nice to see connectivity with the PSP too.

Agent – PS3 – 2009 – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED
– Rockstar Games, maker of Grand Theft Auto, not sure what this is, espionage game, but anything from Rockstar is always good. 🙂

Mod Nation Racers – PS3 – 2010 – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED
– At the start it looked like another Mario Kart type of racer, but what amazed me what the track editor. This was no regular editor, and they managed to build a GREAT looking level in a few minutes on stage. It wasn’t tacky or pre-built or anything, it was an editor that works great. I can’t even begin to describe it, you really have to watch the video if you are into this kind of thing. The game itself looks pretty fun too.

Little Big Planet PSP – PSP – To Be Announced – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED
– All I can say is that I haven’t tried the PS3 version yet, but I intended to until this came out. Going to wait for the PSP version since Little Big Planet always struck me as more of a portable game rather than a console experience.

Uncharted 2 – Among Thieves – PS3 – 2009 – Exclusive, already announced
– Some real gameplay footage, tons of shooting, the game looks great. The main character seemed to be in the middle of utter chaos, I can’t wait.

God of War 3 – PS3 – 2010 – Exclusive, already announced
– Something about it just didn’t appeal to me. It looks far too similar to God of War 2. No new innovation, graphics haven’t improved enough, etc.

Gran Turismo 5 – PS3 – 2009 – Exclusive, already announced
– I guess it happens in every conference, something super exciting happens in a split second and it is over before you know it. We got nothing new out of this…

Final Fantasy XIII – PS3 – Not Exclusive, already announced
– No new information, just a bit of gameplay and a few cut-scenes that I personally haven’t seen yet, might even be new.

MAG – PS3 – 2009 – Exclusive, already announced
– Again, real gameplay footage, personally I’m not sure if I’m buying into this 256 players thing. The graphics don’t look great, but I guess the real selling point is the 256 players in a gigantic arena and the interaction between players.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – PSP – 2010 – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED
– Errrrr, I think the trailer says it all since I haven’t actually played Metal Gear Solid before, or at least finished one (gasp!). Funny end to the video though.

PSP Go – PSP Console – October 1st 2009 – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED (leaked)
– All the pictures leaked out were actually real, in fact the guy on stage called it the worst kept secret of E3. It comes with 16GB memory, bluetooth, no UMD and M2 memory cards. Apparently it is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the PSP 1000, and will sell alongside the PSP 3000. The bad news is the price, it is $249 USD. Along with this announcement, they also talked about something called Media Go, it was just a bunch of stuff about syncing the PSP to the computer, there was no demo or anything, just a lot of claims about how it’ll make life easier.

Resident Evil Portable – PSP – 2010 – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED
– Didn’t catch too much about it, doesn’t look like a port, but I love Resident Evil, so I’m going to get it no matter what.

Gran Turismo PSP – PSP – October 1st 2009 – Exclusive, NEWLY ANNOUNCED
– Coming in at the same release date as the PSP Go it is just another racing game, 800 cars, full 60FPS was what I caught. Looks pretty good for a PSP racer. I actually thought it was a PS3 game for a little while.

Jak and Daxter – The Final Frontier – PSP/PS2 – 2009 – Exclusive, already announced
– I wish I had a PS2, one of the biggest regrets of my life because I have no clue what this is. I guess I’ll have several games to play over this summer just so I can play the new ones coming out soon.

Fat Princess – PSP – To Be Announced – Exclusive, already announced
– Didn’t stand out as something exciting, but who cares…

Hot Shot Tennis – PSP -To Be Announced – Exclusive, already announced
– Very very very brief

SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3 – PSP – 2009 – Exclusive, already announced
– Boring, we want new stuff!

Dissidia – Final Fantasy – PSP – August 25th 2009 – Exclusive, already announced
– The Japanese version has been out for so long that I’ve imported it, played it, and got bored with it already. C’mon this isn’t E3 material! We want new stuff!

MotorStorm – Arctic Edge – PSP – 2009 – Exclusive, already announced
– Yawwwnnnn, seen it before

Trying to find correct videos is hard… I’ll post up more as I find them.
