Splashtop - Can’t wait to see more netbooks with it!

It’s been a long time coming, but I think the newly released Asus N10 netbook is the first netbook (I stand corrected, it seems Lenovo had the first netbooks with Splashtop) to be equipped with Splashtop.  I’ve been hoping that splashtop would come to more laptops and computers faster, but it doesn’t seem to be getting too much interest or attention anywhere.

Splashtop is basically a way to speed up the time between turning your computer on and you surfing the net and listening to some music.  Basically it is a way for you to boot a secondary OS (Splashtop) that can be loaded in a matter of seconds.  This OS is limited to only web browsing, music, skype, photos, and instant messaging, which means you’ll have to restart your computer if you want to do your homework or play some games.

Next Generation of Netbooks?

As you all know, I loved my netbook, the EEEPC701. It’s quite amazing to see how fast technology grows and just how much netbooks developed. It started with a 7 inch model from Asus, and now the market is plagued with them. Lately I’ve been thinking about getting a new one, only to find that in the near future, some of these netbooks will do things far beyond what I thought was possible.

It’s been with me for almost a year, but sadly enough I had to sell it so I could move on to the newer generations of netbooks. What is a netbook? It is a cheap and extremely portable laptop. There are variations of the definition, some quoting specs, other about screen size. The truth is, netbooks have become so popular that almost every company now has their own version, some with many versions, each with different specs, design, etc.

Valentines Day Giveaway!

null

Happy Valentines Day! This will be the first giveaway that comes with DSDatabase Version 4, with 2 carts up for grabs, the M3DS Real and the iTouchDS. As you all know, it took more than a few months of planning to set things in place, so I’ll finally have some more time to post up giveaways, more blog posts, and more content.

Enough with that, the same rules apply as the past giveaways, you simply COMMENT ON ANY POST ON DSDATABASE BLOG with a valid email. You can ONLY gain one entry regardless of the amount of posts. To make things a bit more interesting, I decided to allow all users to gain a SECOND entry by posting on the forum (however, I will be screening for spam and obviously useless posts, unlike the blog posts). All posts on the blog and the forum will be counted up, starting from February 7th, 2009 to February 14th, 2009, and will be AUTOMATICALLY ENTERED INTO THE RAFFLE.

Eastsheen vs Rubik’s Cubes

I’ve been “into” Rubik’s cubes for a while. A few years back, I made the foolish mistake of thinking the brand named Rubik’s cubes (or as cubers would call them; storebought cubes) were the best I could find. And that is true to a certain extent. Just a month ago, I received an Eastsheen cube from DealExtreme (4×4x4) (5×5x5), and at the same time, I borrowed another one from my neighbour.

null

If you are reading this, hopefully you already know how to complete a 3×3x3 Rubik’s cube, because I’m more or less focusing on the larger cubes (don’t worry, I’m just waiting for some new 3×3x3 cubes to come in the mail before giving some tips on which ones to buy). The Rubik’s Revenge (4×4x4) and the Professor Cube (5×5x5) are both available from Rubik’s and from Eastsheen. The difference is that the Rubik’s versions cost almost double in price. So foolishly enough, I took the dive, and bought both cubes at an incredibly ridiculous price on eBay.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Over the weekend, I finally picked up and finished Professor Layton and the Curious Village on the DS. This game has been highly recommended, but also doubted by many (myself included).

null

Before I actually played through it, I always thought that it was just a jumble of puzzles stringed together with a weak story. I couldn’t believe how many times it got nominated or voted for best game, or best gameplay or best whatever. And I’m sure I’m not the only one. I even booted up the game and played an hour or so in the past, and the idea of a mix of random puzzles still stuck with me.

DSDatabase Version 4!

As you all know, I was not a fan of the third version of DSDatabase, which included the portal generated from John Olson’s AeroBlueX phpBB3 theme. It took more than a month of work, and even more planning. Albeit the actual OnePress installation and such were only a week or so of learning to modify the files properly, but hopefully some of you caught a glimpse of the RSS2Page or the extra portal boxes that appeared from time to time.

null

The final result is finally here. I can finally get rid of that portal and present a much nicer, cleaner, site. The actual design is mostly ripped from the default GreyTouch theme released by OnePress, but some modifications were made to make it somewhat our own. Obviously we are planning to do more to make DSDatabase unique and hopefully we will get our own child theme up and running as soon as possible.

DSDatabase’s Next Revision

Are we all disgusted with the DSDatabase front page yet? Frankly I never liked the theme, it never matched the DSDatabase feel and it was pretty alien to me. I thought that the theme would be quickly replaced, but as time passed, other aspects of DSDatabase took priority, and pretty soon, the theme was permanent. If you felt that the bland blue theme is starting to become overused, or maybe the fact that the cluttered mess of blue shades just never appealed to you, then rejoice, a new DSDatabase revision is coming.

Chinese New Year Raffle Winners!

Hiya everyone, I apologize for the delay, I know I’ve been saying that a lot recently, but cutting out 159 little slips with email addresses is really no easy task, and even worse is checking all the entrants for duplicates.

Anyways, I want to thank you everyone for joining, and I most definitely need to thank the EDGE team for sponsoring the tournament.

So to cut to the chase, you can all view the video right here:

And you thought you were a good Tetris player!

I thought I was a pretty good Tetris player. I could always turn impossible situations around, or deal with pieces going down pretty fast, etc. I’ve played Tetris on a variety of consoles, but never have I seen anything as fascinating as Bastet.

null

Bastet has probably been around for quite some time, but I’ve only discovered it today. Bastet is also known as Evil Tetris or Bastard Tetris. The idea behind Bastet is to provide a new level of difficulty for Tetris without the standard speeding up or raising the level of odd bumps. Instead Bastet finds the best piece for the current scenario and simply avoids giving that piece.
